Yes, I do use Photoshop a lot.  The idea came to me to somehow melt wood.  After several attempts this is what I cam up with (using Photoshop).  It originally was a nice wood ball, about 4" in diameter.  It would be hard to go into detail on the technique I used, but it was done primarily with the "Liquify" filter.  The image needs to be cut-out before applying this filter for this look.

I also tried the same techniques on a wooden bowl, with an apple added in.  See below.
